Neurological disorders in children: Cure and Care
This article
will cover the topic of neurological disorders in children, and the possible
causes, cures, and ways to care for these disorders will be discussed.
If you
are a resident of Chennai or would prefer the city for availing medical
treatment facilities for neurological disorders, you can consult a neurologist in Chennai for the same.
Before we get into the details of cure and other factors, it is important to
understand what a neurological disorder means.
What is neurological disorder?
By definition,
a dysfunction in the nervous system or any part of the brain is called a
neurological disorder.
This type of dysfunction can result in physiological or
physical problems, sometimes even both. The symptoms may also be either
physical or physiological or both.
In some cases, it may not be possible to
completely cure or reverse some forms of nerve or brain damage that have been
caused, but it is possible to reduce the symptoms through various treatments.
First and
foremost, it is important to look out for symptoms that appear to be abnormal.
These symptoms could be physical or physiological.
Right from the birth of a
child, it is important to keep a close eye on the child's behavioral patterns
and physical activities. If something appears to be abnormal, consult a pediatric neurologist in Chennai right
away.
Neurological disorder symptoms in children:
New-born
babies should be observed from the time of their birth to see that they are
having a normal and healthy neurological development. They should be monitored
throughout their infant stages to check for abnormalities.
Common symptoms include, but are not limited to:
●
Abnormally large forehead
●
Abnormally shaped spine
●
Unusually bigger/smaller head
●
Seizures
●
Behavioral abnormalities
●
Difficulty in concentrating
●
Difficulty with communication
●
High sensitivity to/low tolerance for pain
●
Premature problems with vision/hearing
●
Impaired speech
●
Excessive/abnormal crying
These are some
of the symptoms that are easily noticeable during the growing stages of a
child. But there are many other symptoms which are less prominent.
Causes:
There can be
several causes for neurological disorders. Some of these are genetic, while
some are not. Genetic factors include chromosome abnormalities such as change
in chromosome numbers and/or structure, mutations, etc.
Metabolic disorders and
congenital defects could also be the cause. Other factors include nutritional
deficiencies, infections, hypoxia (lack of oxygen) during a baby’s development
in the uterus, complications during childbirth, low birth weight, immune
disorders, etc.
Cure and Care:
There are
treatments available for making the neurological condition of a child better.
But the key factor in helping the child and making the treatment more effective
is to report to the neurologist immediately as soon as you notice any unusual
symptom.
Most neurological disorders are progressive in nature. Therefore, the
earlier you treat them, the easier it will be to prevent permanent damage.
There are few
medications/tablets available for reducing nerve pain and controlling seizures
as well. Different medications will be received differently by a child. The
dosage for these medications will differ as well.
Other types of
treatments include behavioral therapy, or sometimes a combination of both
medication and behavioral therapy.
Problems with the brain, spine, nerves or
muscles, or a combination of these, could lead to neurological disorders that
need to be treated immediately to help children prevent any permanent damage
before entering young adulthood.
Developmental
delays are one of the most commonly observed symptoms accompanied by
neurological disorders.
When any such condition is observed, it is important to
practice patience with the child and consult a pediatric neurologist at the
earliest, who will be able to offer treatments to improve cognitive
development.
Conclusion:
Overall, it is important to be very observant of an infant’s development and report to the neurologist as soon as you spot something unusual. The sooner you treat a neurological disorder, the lesser will be the chances of permanent damage..
